This is the moment a fraud investigator confronts three pioneers of one of Britain’s newest ‘crash for ready cash’ scams.

The confident fraudsters can be seen trying to hide their faces as the camera approaches.

Neil Thomas, director of investigative services for Accident Exchange and APU, uploaded this footage to his Twitter account.

The video was taken on the M42 in Leicestershire and Neil is convinced the red Hyundai had tried the tactic numerous times that day already.

He said: “Clearly, going through the insurance claims system poses the risk for criminals that their personal details will be recorded and previous dishonest claims or claims which weren’t paid out identified.

“This emerging trend shows just how entrepreneurial criminals can be; they just want the money and this is a faster, easier way for them to get it without being caught. It’s the modern day equivalent of highway robbery.”

Young women and elderly drivers are being targeted and motorists are being warned by insurers about the modern equivalent of ‘highway robbery.’

In the past ‘crash for cash’ gangs staged collisions and then made fraudulent personal injury claims to insurers and pocketing the pay-outs.
