Popular Sussex County restaurateur Matt Haley was injured in a motorcycle accident Monday afternoon in India, according to Scott Kammerer, Haley’s business partner.

Haley, who won the 2014 James Beard Humanitarian of the Year Award in May, is apparently in critical but stable condition. Kammerer, president of the Matt Haley Companies which operates restaurants in Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach and Ocean View, said Haley was traveling around 18,000 feet in the mountains by motorcycle and was in a collision with a truck. He is in a remote hospital in Leh, India.

Kammerer said Haley, who was wearing a helmet, is unconscious but gradually improving. He said Haley is expected to be transferred to a hospital in New Delhi.
