Youth sues mother over road accident

A TEENAGE boy from County Limerick who sued his mother following a minor road collision was awarded almost €14,000 in damages.

The boy, who is from the Rathkeale area and is now aged 17, initiated the Personal Injury claim through his father following the collision more than two years ago.

At Limerick Circuit Court, Judge Carroll Moran was told the accident happened near Charleville, County Cork on April 22, 2012 when the car being driven by the plaintiff’s mother “rear-ended” another vehicle.

The court was told the youth experienced pain in his neck and back as a result of the impact and underwent x-rays in hospital following the collision.

He was subsequently prescribed anti-inflammatories by his GP and suffered from restricted movement for some time afterwards.

Lawyers representing the boy, who were instructed by solicitor Michael O’Donnell, said their client sustained soft tissue injuries and attended a physiotherapist on three occasions following the collision. He also had a number of follow-up visits with his GP.

The teenager was examined by doctors on behalf of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB) last December, who found that he was still suffering from “intermittent neck and back pain”.
