UK Government figures show that an estimated 7.7 million UK residents travelled abroad in August 2013. Figures also show that in 2012 approximately 70 Brits a week were hospitalised abroad.

A survey of 1000 people, compiled by the Hugh James Holiday Accidents Team, has found that travellers are not fully aware of their rights if they suffer an accident abroad. Those who book a holiday or excursions through their credit card, or via an ATOL protected provider, have greater protection and are more likely to be successful when making a personal injury claim. 20.8% of those asked were aware that booking their holiday or excursions through a credit card meant they could make a compensation claim from the credit card company. More people were aware that they had greater protection when booking with an ATOL protected provider, however, 47.9% of those surveyed were still unaware.
